GUITAR FISH

Order: Rajiformes.
Family: Rhinobatidae.
Distribution: temperate and tropical waters.

It gets its name from the characteristic shape of its body, which is very similar to the stringed instrument. Its head is flattened, with a pointed snout, and the fusiform body usually has a dark spot on the lower snout. They have large spiracles that are located immediately behind the eyes. They are brown on the dorsal and lighter on the ventral area. They can grow up to 2.6 metres long.

It feeds on small crustaceans and molluscs on the seabed.

It is a solitary fish that only joins others in order to reproduce. It is ovoviviparous and the female gives birth to 5 to 25 pups of about 15 cm.
