INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY. MEETING WITH PILAR MATEO

With the celebration of International Women’s Day (8 March), the Directorate General for Equality and the Institute of Women, together with the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, are organising an activity aimed at primary schools.

On 9 March, students will have the opportunity to meet Valencian scientist Pilar Mateo, an internationally recognised figure in chemistry and public health. This initiative is specially designed to bring female role models into the classroom, foster STEAM vocations from an early age, and promote values such as equal opportunities, social commitment, and scientific curiosity.

An inspiring scientist

Pilar Mateo Herrero (Valencia, 1959) holds a PhD in Chemical Sciences and is one of Spain’s most internationally recognised scientists. Her work in polymer microencapsulation has led to innovative solutions to combat diseases such as malaria, dengue, and Chagas disease in vulnerable communities.

Her best-known technology, the insecticidal paint Inesfly, has had a direct impact on improving public health in several countries.

Beyond her scientific career, she is also recognised for her social commitment: she has worked directly with indigenous communities in Latin America and leads initiatives that combine science, education, and social impact.

During the session, she will share her personal and professional journey with students, showing how science can become a real tool for social transformation.
