WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE? CHALLENGES AND THREATS OF AI

The Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències launches its Artificial Intelligence Lecture Series with an essential talk to understand what artificial intelligence (AI) is and how it is transforming our society and economy.

This new series, organised in collaboration with the Valencian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (VRAIN) of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), aims to bring AI closer to the public and to offer a clear, accessible and critical perspective on its social, ethical and economic impact.

The lecture series will begin on 5 February with the talk “What Is Artificial Intelligence? Challenges and Threats of AI”, delivered by Vicent Botti, PhD in Computer Science and full professor at UPV. Botti is a pioneer of AI in Spain and Europe, director of the Valencian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (VRAIN), and of the Valencian Graduate School and AI Research Network (ValgrAI).

In this first session, the concept of artificial intelligence will be defined, along with its main applications and its impact on society and the economy. The challenges and threats posed by AI will also be addressed, including its ethical, social and legal implications, as well as the role of responsible artificial intelligence as a response to these challenges and the issues arising from its development.

The conference will also reflect on key questions such as moral decision-making by artificial systems, the responsibility of companies and governments in their design and use, and the need to place people at the centre of technological development. In addition, concrete examples will be presented to show how artificial intelligence is already present in fields such as medicine, education, industry, agriculture and public administration, making its influence on everyday life tangible.

This first event opens a series of six free lectures, to be held between February and October, addressing topics such as generative AI and language models, artificial intelligence singularity, smart cities, personalised medicine and education. A unique opportunity to learn from leading experts and take part in an informed debate on the present and future of artificial intelligence.
