THE SINGULARITY OF AI. CAN AI SOLVE ANY PROBLEM?

On April 15, 2026, the lecture “The Singularity of AI. Can AI Solve Any Problem?” will take place, a session that will examine the theoretical and practical limits of current computation. The talk will be delivered by Chema Sempere, PhD in Computer Science and Associate Professor in Programming Languages and Computer Systems in the Department of Computer Systems and Computation at the Universitat Politècnica de València. Sempere currently serves as Deputy Scientific Director of the Valencian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (VRAIN) and is a member of the Joint Research Unit of the Valencian Graduate School and Research Network in Artificial Intelligence (ValgrAI). His research career, supported by more than 100 international publications and European projects, focuses on areas such as natural computing, computational biology, and computational complexity.

The debate on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

The session will address the debate surrounding the singularity of Artificial Intelligence, a concept that envisions a hypothetical scenario in which machines surpass humans in any cognitive task, irreversibly transforming civilization. This vision is grounded in the possible emergence of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) capable of autonomously solving any arbitrarily chosen problem. During the lecture, the speaker will examine how the rise of machine learning and the popularization of tools such as ChatGPT have reinforced the social perception that this technology is imminent, despite the fact that its definitive realization has yet to occur.

Theoretical limits and technical feasibility

Throughout the presentation, the reasons why the development of AGI faces limits that, in practice, hinder its achievement will be explained. The analysis will focus on distinguishing which types of problems can be solved automatically by machines and how the constraints of computability and complexity condition the very possibility of general intelligence as it is currently conceived. The session will offer a technical perspective on why, despite constant announcements of progress, this technology encounters fundamental barriers that render it unattainable under the terms of the current debate.
