SEEING IS BELIEVING: THE ROLE OF CRYO-ELECTRON MICROSCOPY IN BIOMEDICINE

The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Eva Nogales, Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology at the University of California, Berkeley; Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute; Senior Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA); and member of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the IBV-CSIC. Internationally recognized as one of the leading experts in the development and application of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), Dr. Nogales will present her pioneering contributions to the visualization of microtubules and the structural study of the complex that initiates gene transcription. The lecture will take place on December 19 at 4:30 p.m. at the Museu de les Ciències.

The three-dimensional structure of proteins is a true roadmap for understanding how our cells work, how certain diseases arise, and how new drugs can be designed. In recent years, one technique has revolutionized this field: cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM).

Thanks to this technology, it is now possible to observe molecules at near-atomic resolution and decipher structures that were previously out of reach. Cryo-EM makes it possible to study highly dynamic molecular complexes and polymers such as microtubules—essential components of cellular organization and targets of anticancer drugs like Taxol. It also provides a unique window into the mechanisms that activate gene initiation and trigger the production of RNA that will ultimately give rise to proteins.
