UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE MOON. THE TRIAD OF SOLAR ECLIPSES 2026, 2027 AND 2028

On 28 April, astronomer Pedro García Lario, from the European Space Agency (ESA), will give a conference for the general public at the Santiago Grisolía Auditorium of the Museu de les Ciències.

The talk will focus on one of the most significant astronomical events of the coming years: the series of solar eclipses that will be visible from Spain between 2026 and 2028.

An exceptional astronomical phenomenon in Spain

Between 2026 and 2028, the Iberian Peninsula will witness a rare phenomenon: two total solar eclipses and one annular eclipse, visible from different parts of the country within a period of just three years.

This coincidence makes Spain a privileged location for sky observation and scientific outreach.

What we will discover in the conference

The session offers an overview of solar eclipses, explaining their origin and the fascination they have inspired since ancient times.

During the conference, the following topics will be covered:

  • The “Iberian triad”: characteristics of each eclipse and their visibility across Spain.
  • Safe observation: key guidelines for an optimal viewing experience.
  • Global impact: cultural, historical and scientific relevance of these events.
  • Science and tourism: opportunities for citizen science and astronomical tourism.

In addition, the talk will reflect on the opportunities these events offer for scientific outreach, citizen science and astronomical tourism.

An invitation to prepare for a series of eclipses that will turn the skies of Spain into the stage for one of nature’s greatest spectacles.

The speaker: Pedro García Lario

Pedro García Lario (Madrid, 1964) is an astronomer at the European Space Agency (ESA) and a member of the Scientific and Advisory Committee of the Eclipse Trio.

He holds a PhD in Astrophysics and is part of the scientific team of the Gaia mission at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC). He has authored around 150 publications and specialises in stellar evolution. He is also actively involved in initiatives related to dark sky protection, scientific outreach and citizen science.
